"A warrior's plank is his wall, his cover, and his last line of defence before iron bites bone." Osric, Keeper of the Hearth & Forge
Between the eighth and eleventh centuries, Norse war-bands made the round shield the undisputed hallmark of maritime warfare. Constructed from genuine timber planks, this round shield honours those seafaring traditions, balancing responsive movement with defensive resilience. The natural grain runs proudly across the face, giving each piece its own distinctive battle record before ever meeting an adversary.
Forged for field utility and authentic presentation, the critical defensive points feature mild steel fittings. Across the face, 18-gauge metal reinforcing bands secure the timber against splitting, whilst a stout 16-gauge steel boss (umbo) protects the hand at the centre from direct cleaves. Behind the hollow of the boss sits an iron handle wrapped in a wooden cover, shaped to provide a firm, tactile grip when bearing down against impact or marching through rough terrain.
Whether deployed for theatrical combat, historical encampments, or mounted upon your hall wall, treat this buckler with proper craft care. Dry the timber thoroughly after any wet muster, and keep the metal fittings lightly oiled against moisture to ward off rust. Store it in a temperate armoury away from damp stone or blistering sun to ensure the timbers do not warp. Fit your arm securely through the boss recess, and let it serve steadfastly in your shield wall.
