"A helmet must turn an axe blow and sit steady upon the brow when the shield wall clashes." Osric, Keeper of the Hearth & Forge
Spanning the sixth to eleventh centuries, the spangenhelm stood as the favoured helm for Carolingians, Normans, and Norse warriors. Its name derives from the German 'Spange' – the stout metal strips uniting distinct plates into a single conical dome. This conical geometry encourages incoming blows from arrows, axes, and swords to glance harmlessly away, diminishing impact shock across the cranium.
Handcrafted from 18-gauge mild steel, the helm balances necessary fortitude with mobility, weighing approximately 1.8 kilograms. Each piece bears individual nuances in shape and finish from the workshop, providing genuine character suited to historical combat, living history, or LARP. The nasal bar descends over the face, safeguarding vital features whilst preserving an open field of vision for both cavalry riders and foot soldiers.
Inside, an adjustable leather liner cushions against shock and balances weight across the skull, reducing pressure and chafing during long campaigns. Fasten the leather chin strap and brass buckle securely beneath the jaw to keep the helm locked in place during active manoeuvres. Between musterings, wipe the steel clean with a soft, dry cloth and dress it in oil to deter rust. Store it in a dry, ventilated armoury, and condition the leather fittings as needed to retain their resilience.
