"A cavalryman who cannot turn his neck or draw breath will not survive the charge." Osric, Keeper of the Hearth & Forge
This zischägge, or lobster tail pot helmet, captures the martial ironwork forged across Europe from the mid-1600s onward. Ubiquitous amongst cavalrymen and line infantry during the brutal Thirty Years’ War, the design struck a pragmatic balance between formidable protection and field mobility.
Handcrafted from 16 gauge mild steel, the skull bears subtle hammer marks beneath an antique finish, reminiscent of pieces beaten into shape upon a campaign anvil. The layered, segmented lobster-tail neck guard shields the back of the neck from downward slashes whilst preserving crucial head movement in the saddle. Hinged cheek plates guard the face against glancing strikes without restricting breathing or obscuring your field of view.
Inside, a fitted padded liner cushions the crown and evenly distributes the iron weight, ensuring stability over protracted engagements. A robust leather chin strap with buckle secures the helm firmly to the jaw, making it ready to don straight from the workshop bench.
As each piece is individually crafted, subtle variations in the finish and liner naturally occur. To preserve this armour in your garrison, wipe the steel dry of sweat and moisture after every muster, coat the surfaces in a light oil against rust, and brush dirt gently from the internal lining.
