"A legionary's strength rests on flexible mail and overlapping plate; deflect the blow before it finds your joint." Osric, Keeper of the Hearth & Forge
Patterned after the tried-and-tested defences of the Roman frontier, these Lorica Squamata pauldrons unite classical scale work with practical protection. The assembly begins with a shaped, solid steel plate that sits cleanly over the curve of the shoulder. Suspended beneath, rows of individual 20-gauge mild steel scales overlap like the hide of a serpent, secured across a resilient genuine leather backing. This segmented design sheds downward sword blows and glancing spear thrusts while allowing your sword arm to strike unhindered.
In the field, fit and cohesion are paramount. Each spaulder features genuine leather straps pierced with adjustment holes and fastened with stout metal buckles, ensuring a firm wrap about the bicep over an arming doublet or tunic. Upper attachment points allow you to lace these pauldrons directly to a matching Lorica Squamata cuirass, leather gorget, or harness points.
As these are individually handcrafted from mild steel, natural variations in surface texture and scale alignment will arise from the forge workbench. Steel exposed to salt and rain demands discipline: after a hard day in the field, wipe each plate clear of dampness and grime, then rub a thin coat of mineral oil over the scales to keep rust at bay. Keep them stored dry, and they will serve you faithfully across many campaigns.
