"A proper kit starts with sensible cloth. Out on the march or within the bailey, honest weave shields folk from road dust and scorching midday heat." Osric, Keeper of the Hearth & Forge
Drawn from European headwear worn between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries, this oval veil represents an indispensable garment of medieval life. Beyond reflecting station and modesty, simple headcoverings provided daily defence against wind, harsh sun, and the grime of campaign travel. Cut from an unadorned one-piece oval pattern, the textile falls naturally around the shoulders and head.
This piece is offered in two distinct cloth weaves. The hundred percent flax linen option delivers a crisp, authentic texture, favoured for its breathability, strength, and moisture-absorbing character under hot skies. Alternatively, the blend of eighty-seven percent cotton and thirteen percent linen lends a fuller, noticeably softer feel while retaining adequate airflow for long days in camp.
Versatility in styling makes this veil practical for various portrayals. It may be cast loosely over the crown, secured under the chin with pins, or layered over a wimple, fillet, or cap for formal attire. Each piece is individually crafted by hand; minor variations in the stitch and weave are expected marks of genuine craftsmanship.
To maintain your veil, wash it gently in cold water using mild detergent and lay it flat to dry. Ironing on moderate heat whilst the weave remains slightly damp will easily restore its clean lines for your next garrison duty.
