Osric, Keeper of the Hearth & Forge

"A spearhead wins the skirmish, but a stout shoe saves the shaft when you form a shield wall." Osric, Keeper of the Hearth & Forge

A spear without a proper ferrule is half-finished work. In the press of campaign life, warriors of the Viking Age, early medieval garrisons, and even Roman legions relied on an iron butt cap to guard the base of their ash shafts. Struck directly into wet mud, rocky soil, or gravel, an unprotected stave quickly rots, frays, or splits.

Hammered by hand from solid iron, this socketed cap serves three vital purposes at the workbench and on the field. First, it anchors the timber, shielding the wood grain against splintering under hard impacts. Second, it acts as a counterweight against a heavy forward spearhead, shifting balance closer to the grip for swifter recovery in line combat. Third, should your primary point be bound or broken, this blunt cap provides a secondary striking point.

Crafted with a historic split-socket design, the fitting features a 3 cm (approximately 1 1/8 inch) inner diameter. This open seam accommodates natural variances in wood grain, compressing firmly around a tapered haft when secured with a rivet or pin through the integrated fixing hole. Each piece displays distinct hammer marks and a raw forged texture, offering authentic character for living history reenactors and polearm builders.

Keep your ferrule campaign-ready: wipe it dry after wet weather, apply a light coat of oil to deter surface rust, and store it away from damp quarters. Note that the wooden haft is not included.
