"A warrior’s neck is ever a tempting target; gird it well before entering the lists." Osric, Keeper of the Hearth & Forge
When outfitting a bascinet or great helm for the muster, leaving your throat bare is folly. This traditional mail curtain provides dependable defence for the neck, throat, and clavicles while ensuring unobstructed articulation in the heat of combat.
Crafted at the bench from 16 gauge high tensile spring steel wire formed into 9mm internal diameter rings, this aventail employs the time-tested European four-in-one pattern. While constructed with butted rings to keep the weight manageable upon the shoulders, the spring steel composition offers marked resistance to deformation compared to standard iron or mild wire. It delivers an authentic martial silhouette for reenactors, theatrical performers, and LARP skirmishers undertaking light training.
Securing the mail to your helm is straightforward thanks to the stout leather band stitched firmly along the upper margin. Through this border, you may lace arming cords or drive rivets directly into your helm's vervelles. For proper fit and comfort, always drape this curtain over a padded arming cap or quilted canvas coif to prevent chafing and soften incoming strikes. Ensure the mantle falls evenly across the shoulders to maintain balance during aggressive manoeuvres.
Each piece bears subtle handcrafted variations from the forge. Arriving oiled to stave off rust on campaign, maintain this guard by wiping it down after damp weather and lightly treating the rings with oil before storing it dry.
