"A warrior’s plate is only as dependable as the cloth beneath it; strap iron over bare bones and you will bleed before the foe even strikes." Osric, Keeper of the Hearth & Forge
Tailored after fifteenth-century garments, this arming doublet serves as the working underlayer for serious harness. The shell is stout cotton canvas, layered with internal padding and lined in soft, breathable cotton. This layered construction absorbs blunt shock from heavy blows whilst protecting the flesh from galling steel and pinching leather straps during protracted field campaigns.
Function dictates every seam. Reinforced arming points line the full-length sleeves, providing dependable anchor cords to suspend your spaulders, vambraces, or couters directly where they belong. At the neck, a raised stand-up collar shields the throat and collarbones from the unforgiving bite of a gorget or breastplate rim. Eyelets matched with sturdy metal-tipped laces secure the front closure, allowing a close, bespoke fit that will not shift or bunch under heavy armour.
Given its handmade nature, slight variances in quilting and stitch density are natural hallmarks of authentic artisan manufacture. To care for this garment after arduous drills, wash gently by hand or run on a cold machine cycle. Always hang to air dry – never tumble dry – and store flat or upon a broad hanger once bone dry to deter mould and preserve its tailoring.
