"When a blade seeks the gap betwixt mail and plate, a stout roundel turns disaster into a glancing ring." Osric, Keeper of the Hearth & Forge
During the 14th century, knights began supplementing mail with steel plates, seeking to guard vulnerable joints that mail alone could not secure. These roundel spaulders echo that pivotal transitional era. Hammered into a dished profile from 16 gauge mild steel, each plate effectively deflects oncoming strikes while granting the warrior unimpeded freedom of movement.
The outer rim is bound in thick, genuine leather, firmly anchored with rivets. This border reinforces the steel edge against harsh percussive wear, ensuring the plates withstand repeated campaign use. Handcrafted individually, each piece bears natural variations in finish, leather shade, and rivet alignment, lending honest character to your armoury.
Functionality is their greatest virtue on the field. You may lace them directly upon the shoulder as lightweight spaulders, or fasten them slightly lower as besagews to shield the exposed void of the armpit. This dual utility makes them an invaluable asset for historical combat, reenactments, and theatrical display.
To keep this harness field-worthy, wipe the plates clean with a dry cloth after each bout. Store them away from damp air and apply a light coat of oil to maintain the polished steel. Treat the leather trim with conditioner to retain its suppleness.
