"A soldier needs iron at his vitals, but stiffness will cost you your neck when the line buckles." Osric, Keeper of the Hearth & Forge
Rooted in historical thirteenth-century European coat-of-plates designs, this brigandine offers reliable protection without encumbering the wearer. The rugged cotton canvas exterior encases forty-six internal mild steel plates, each fastened firmly with exterior rivets. This construction grants superior flexibility compared to solid plate, allowing you to twist, parry, and strike with unhindered speed during reenactment bouts, LARP clashes, or stage performances.
Aesthetically finished with traditional diamond quilting and a clean rounded neckline, this harness also incorporates short sleeves and centre hem slits to aid natural movement in the field. Sizing is readily adapted to your frame via robust leather side straps, ensuring a snug, balanced fit over your arming doublet or tunic. Because each brigandine is handcrafted, subtle variations in the diamond quilting and rivet positioning naturally occur, giving each garment honest character.
To preserve your harness across many seasons in the field, proper maintenance is essential. Keep the brigandine dry, and stow it in a cool, well-ventilated armoury to prevent rust and mildew. Should the steel plates meet moisture during damp marches, apply a light coat of protective oil to the metalwork. Regularly dress the leather adjustment straps with a reliable conditioner to keep them supple, preventing cracking under tension.
