"A plain strap holds your kit, but adorned leather marks a warrior of standing." Osric, Keeper of the Hearth & Forge
Cast in solid brass, these medieval belt studs – known to seasoned artificers as cochos – provide the finishing touch required for historical leatherwork. Measuring approximately two centimetres long by three centimetres wide, each fitting combines structural durability with traditional medieval style, whether bound to a sword belt, pouch flap, or armour strapping.
Every stud is individually hand-cast, lending distinct, subtle variations in shape and finish that mass manufacture cannot replicate. Working them onto leather demands care at the anvil. Pierce your leather strap cleanly and guide the integral brass peg through. If the shank extends excessively beyond your leather, trim it flush before peening to prevent bending under the strike. Place a brass washer over the back and gently mushroom the shank with light hammer blows. Brass is far softer than arming steel, so measured, steady taps are essential to avoid shearing the post or marring the face.
In the field, these mounts withstand regular campaign use, steadily developing a deep, natural patina when kept dry. A simple buff with a dry, soft cloth keeps them clean without stripping their hard-won character. Whether fitting out a fresh reenactment harness or detailing leather armour for the shield wall, this five-piece set delivers genuine craft to your harness.
